Civil engineers have their hands in all kinds of city planning projects. If you love the thought of constructing bridges, dams, roads, sidewalks and playgrounds, it’s definitely a viable career choice for you! But what if you aren’t sure how to get started as a civil engineer? Here are just a few ideas to turn your dreams into a reality.

1. Choose a Good Program

For engineering majors, the school itself isn’t nearly as important as the program. It’s okay to settle for a second-rate university if it has a first-rate civil engineering program. Do some research into things like classes and internships to figure out which school is right for you. You can also look up famous civil engineers and see where they went!

2. Decide On Your Specialty

While this isn’t really required, you’ll find that more doors are open to you as a specialist rather than a jack of all trades. The good news is that it doesn’t matter if you focus your attention on structural engineering, transportation engineering or geotechnical engineering. Just having a niche will impress potential employers.

3. Find a Mentor

Sign up for internships. Go to networking events. Hit up your favorite engineers on social media. There are many ways to find a mentor in the civil engineering field, and they can help to guide you through the unique challenges that you’ll face as an up-and-coming professional. If nothing else, rubbing elbows with the elites will help you get noticed.

4. Familiarize Yourself with the Local Scene

How would you describe civil engineering Seattle? Who are the major players? What have they designed? You won’t be taken seriously as a newbie in your industry unless you can prove that you have the knowledge of someone much older. This is another area where research can really help!

Maybe you want to build bridges. Maybe you’ve always dreamed of having a public park named after you. Whatever your reasons for going into civil engineering, let these tips serve as stepping stones for your future success!
