Why Do We Use Contractions?
Anyway, the kids got a huge kick out of me singing to them, and one of my students decided to make her own contraction song. And a first time mother who birth her baby with mostly 10 minute spaces between contractions. Report any contractions to your doctor or midwife so she can determine what’s happening. So they just send me home and tell me to come back for my next appointment in two weeks – to weeks worrying for me.
A contraction is a shortened form of a word (or group of words) that omits certain letters or sounds. Words like can’t (can + not), don’t (do + not), and I’ve (I + have) are all contractions. It’s common to think the first signs of contractions are your cue to come to the hospital, but that’s usually not the case.
I remember going home early from work the Friday before my daughter was born because I was having painful contractions which continued but never increased in intensity nor stayed consistent until about midnight Saturday morning. Contractions move in a wave-like motion from the top of the uterus to the bottom.
Drink some water because these contractions can sometimes be brought on by dehydration. In third grade, students learn to differentiate between some common contractions and their homophones (they’re/their/there, you’re/your). I started to have pretty intense contractions around midnight and my water finally broke at 4cm around 4am Wednesday morning, delivered at 330pm after I pushed for 3+ hours and still needed vacuum assist.
You’ll probably feel these double-peak contractions as you reach the point where your cervix is almost fully dilated. If it’s two words that have been joined to make one, an apostrophe should be in there somewhere. If there are no pathologies and amniotic fluids are clean there is no necessity to cause the contractions.
